Changing Your Laptop Settings From School to Home
(for West Campus)
Depending upon what type of Internet access you have at home and how that
system is configured, there are a few settings that students may need to switch
back & forth between home and school in order to take advantage of both
systems. This web page will direct you to where the school network
settings are located on the students' laptops that might be interfering with
your home Internet connectivity.
Windows XP Settings
1) The wireless system at Trevor is named "mansfield".
If you are using a wireless signal at home, this will need to be adjusted to
whatever your home system is called by using the wireless configuration options.
To do this, right-click on the wireless signal indicator in bottom-right corner,
go to "View Available Wireless Networks", and click
"Advanced". The name of your home wireless system can simply be
added to the list of Preferred networks. Windows XP should then be able to
detect either the "mansfield" wireless signal or your home wireless
signal, depending upon which one is available.
2) The school proxy client software may also interfere with your home system.
To disable the software go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel. Look for
an icon labeled either “WSP Client” or “Firewall Client”. Double-click
to open this panel. There should be a check-box allowing you to Enable the
software. When students are at school, they check that box in order to Enable
the software. At home, you will want to un-check the box, which should disable
the software. You may be prompted to restart the machine once this change is
made.
3) Finally, we use a Proxy Server to connect to the Internet here at school.
You can disable this setting by going to Control Panel -> Internet Options
-> Connections -> LAN Settings. We use FW4 on port 8080 as our proxy
server, but that may need to be turned off when you are at home.
Either of the two proxy settings that might be interfering with your home Internet
connectivity will probably need to be turned back on when students come back to
school to use our network, so students should become familiar with where those
settings are located on their laptops and with how to change the settings
themselves.
