Broadband Internet Services: Cable Modem or DSL

  • Broadband Services are generally more expensive and faster.

  • You can access all types of websites including ones with streaming audio and video (streaming media) and high levels of graphical content.

  • Broadband service is generally limited to one site, so you only get service in your home and need to get another type of service when traveling or when you are in a different location.

  • There are services, such as AOL Broadband, which provide you with both home-based broadband and dial up access for when you are not at home for one price.

  • Broadband service does not tie up your phone or cable TV line.

  • Broadband service set up is more complicated than dial up but can be achieved by most people with the instructions provided by the ISP.

  • Broadband service generally falls into three categories:  1) DSL (digital subscriber line) which is provided via your phone line.  2) Cable service which is provided by your cable TV supplier. 3) Fiber Optic Service, or "FiOS" is now offered by Verizon in limited areas.  FiOS is faster than DSL or cable.

  • DSL can be provided by a number of companies but in the end your DSL service in NYC comes from your phone lines which are provided by Verizon.

  • Time Warner (RoadRunner) or RCN are common cable providers in New York City.

  • Internet Service is often packaged with other services the companies provide, so if you want multiple phone lines, DSL, long distance and mobile phone service from Verizon you can get attractively priced package deals.

  • If you want premium cable service from Time Warner you can get Road Runner Broadband service in a well priced package.

  • The Broadband component of these packages generally falls in the range of $40-$50 per month whether it is DSL or Cable.
