The following routines will help your computer stay in
good shape by reducing the number of unnecessary files and tuning up
your hard drive.
- Run CHKDSK:
- Start ->Run
- Enter CMD in the prompt
- Click OK
- Enter CHKDSK c: /f at the command
prompt and press the Enter key
- You will be prompted that the system will be
checked the next time you restart your computer. Enter Y
to have your system checked.
- Type Exit
- Run Disk Defragmenter: Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System tools ->
Disk Defragmenter. Disk Defragmenter will push all of your saved files into one area of
memory in order to free up larger blocks of space.
- Check your hard drive space:
- Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System tools
-> Disc Cleanup
- Double-click on the C: drive to see how much space is left.
- Use Find to search for *.tmp files - delete all.
- Delete Temporary Internet Files
- Right Click the
Internet Explorer Icon on your desktop
and select Properties
- In Browsing History, select
Settings
- Adjust Disc space to use to 50 (mb)
- Click Ok
- Now Delete Temporary (Cached) Internet Files
- In Browsing History, select
Delete
- Next to Temporary Internet Files select
Delete Files...
- You will be prompted to make sure you would
like to delete these unnecessary files
- Click Yes and
the files will be deleted
- Click Close
- Click Ok
- Right-click on your Recycle Bin to Empty Recycle Bin. Also
Right-click on the Recycle
Bin again and go to Properties. Change the maximum size of the Recycle Bin to 2% or 3% as
well to free up more hard drive space.
