Techniques for Searching

Make searches more effective by using the following syntax and operators.

  • Caps Capitalize names and titles -- Example: Rock Hudson

  • Use commas (,) to separate names and titles -- Example: Bozo, Ronald McDonald

  • Use double quotation marks (") or hyphens for words that must appear together -- Example: "stupid pet tricks" or stupid-pet-tricks

  • Put a plus sign (+) in front of a word that must be found in the documents -- Example: city guides +San Francisco

  • Use a pipe (|) to search within a certain set of results -- Example: dogs|dalmations

  • Use link: to find pages with specific links on them -- Example: link:www.infoseek.comsite:

  • Use site: to locate a site and its related pages -- Example: site:sun.comtitle:

  • Use title: to search for a specific title of a site -- Example: title:"The New York Times"
