Compressing Pictures Already on Your
Website
Issue: If you find that it takes
a long time to open your web site, it may be because the pictures on your
site have not been compressed. To compress photos already on your site,
click on the picture and then click on the
Resample icon (left of the
pointer icon) on the picture toolbar. If you don’t see the picture
toolbar, move the cursor to the toolbar area, right click and select
Pictures.

When you click on a picture in your site
which needs to be resampled, a small icon will appear at the bottom right
corner of the picture
.
Select this icon and select resample picture to match size.

Compressing Pictures Before
Posting to Your Website
When adding new photos to your web site
it is much more efficient to compress them before they are uploaded. To do
so, please follow the directions below.
Click:
- Start
- All Programs
- Microsoft Office
- Microsoft Office Tools
- Microsoft Office Picture
Manager
If the folder with the pictures you need
is not listed under Picture Shortcuts
(left column) –
- Click on
Add picture shortcut… (top of
left column) and select the folder in which your pictures are stored
- Click on [folder
name], which should now appear under
Picture Shortcuts
- Click on one picture to select it
or hold down the Ctrl key and click on multiple pictures to select them
- Click on
Edit pictures (right column)

- Click on
Compress Pictures (bottom of
right column)

- Under
Compress pictures settings
(right column), click on the circle next to
Web pages.
- At the bottom of the column you can
see the reduction in size between the original and compressed versions
of the picture.
- Click on the
OK box to compress the
picture.

- Click on the
Unsaved Edits folder (bottom
of left column) to locate the picture(s) you compressed.
- In order to finish the compression
process you must save the pictures.
- Click
-
File
-
Save as
and specify a new name for the picture file.

Important Note: If you save a picture under the original name you
will no longer have access to an uncompressed version. If you plan
to use the picture other than for web pages, i.e. printing, you must
save the compressed picture under a different name to preserve the
original uncompressed version. In the example below, the
compressed version of the Winter
picture was named Winter–web
and the original is named Winter.

Picture Manager can also be used to
edit photos – touch up, crop, sharpen, etc.
Experiment with the tool and/or use
the Help facility to get
additional information. |
