Laptop Maintenance Days

Laptop Maintenance Days
August - September 2009

     Dell Latitude E4300

The Trevor Technology Team will be available for laptop maintenance throughout the month of August and first week of September. All Middle and High School students should bring their laptop to the Upper School on one of the scheduled maintenance days. (See schedule at bottom of page.) To avoid a late summer crunch, we highly recommend that Upper School students stop in to have their laptops checked out as early in August as possible. It is not necessary to schedule an appointment for Laptop Maintenance Days, but please call before coming in to make sure a Technology Associate will be available.

Note: Laptop Maintenance Days apply only to Upper School students. The technology team will work with children entering 5th grade after the start of the school year. If your child is a rising 5th grader and needs assistance with his/her new Dell laptop during the summer, please send an email to ectech@trevornet.org and we will contact you.

  • Who should attend Laptop Maintenance Days?

    • All 6th grade students should come in to have their laptop network settings changed from the East Campus to the West Campus.
    • Middle and High School students who purchase a new laptop during the summer should come in to have it customized and properly configured for the Trevor network.
    • All other Middle and High School students should stop in to make sure their laptops still connect to our network, and to resolve any hardware or software problems.
  • Why should I attend August Laptop Maintenance Days?
    • Teachers will expect students to use their laptops on the first day of the new school year.
    • The technology staff will be extremely busy during the first few weeks of school and will be able to give your laptop more attention during August.
  • What do I need to do to prepare for Laptop Maintenance Days?
    • Prior to coming in, you MUST backup any PERSONAL files you have saved on the laptop hard drive, i.e. music, videos, photos and documents.  The technology staff may need to reimage the laptop hard drive and all information on the drive will be lost unless it has been backed up.  Personal files should be saved to an external hard drive, thumb drive, or other computer, depending upon the quantity and size of the files.  All school related files will be backed up to the Trevor network storage facility if the hard drive needs to be reimaged.  Personal files may NOT be backed up to the school network. What should I expect when I arrive for Laptop Maintenance Days?

    • You may be asked to follow written instructions for completing some common tasks, such as customizing your new Dell laptop for the Trevor network.
    • We cannot predict how long you will need to remain at school, as it will depend upon the amount of maintenance required and the number of students ahead of you. However, you should expect to be at Trevor for a least one hour.
    • You may need to leave your laptop at school for a few days to allow the technology staff adequate time to troubleshoot complex problems or make hardware repairs.

Newly Purchased Dell Laptops

If you bought a Dell laptop this summer, we will email a temporary username and password to you. If you do not receive a message with the credentials, email Steve Schechter sschechter@trevor.org. The login username is tdsadmin (Please do not change the login password for tdsadmin, as it will be needed by the Tech Staff to diagnose and repair any problems that arise.) Your child may use the temporary credentials until he/she comes to school for Laptop Maintenance Days, when the machine will be configured to access our network. If your child plans to use his/her new laptop before school begins, please note the following important information:

  • The CA eTrust anti-virus program has been installed on the laptop.
  • DO NOT remove it, as this particular antivirus program is required for accessing the Trevor network.
  • DO NOT install any additional anti-virus programs, as doing so will cause the laptop to crash.
  • Your new Dell laptop comes with the DVDs for MS Office 2007.  If you choose not to install the software yourself, please bring the DVDs to Trevor when you come in for Laptop Maintenance Days.
  • Files stored on the laptop while logged in with the temporary credentials could be lost when the computer is configured to access the Trevor network. Before coming in for Laptop Maintenance Days, backup any files your child has saved on the laptop’s hard drive, i.e. music, photos and documents. You can save them to an external hard drive or thumb drive, depending upon the number and size of the files.
