Dell Laptop Ordering Information
2007-2008
The Trevor pedagogy is founded on the idea that learning should
be experiential, with students at the center of their educational activities and
we believe our use of technology perfectly complements this basic concept. The
laptop computer, in particular, is central in helping our students become
anytime, anywhere learners. With their laptops in hand they are poised to access
our intranet and the digital world beyond the physical boundaries of the school.
Trevor students learn to purposefully collect and evaluate information and
employ the computer’s vast array of tools to create, communicate and demonstrate
their growing understanding of the world around them. Powerful new laptops allow
them to express themselves through creation of web sites, videos, DVDs and other
dynamic multimedia presentations.
The Trevor one-to-one computing program begins with
the fifth grade and all students in grades five through twelve have their own
laptop. If your child is presently a Trevor student and he/she will enter
grade five or nine in September 2007, or if your child will be a new
student in the September and will be entering grade five or above, please note
the following:
- Students entering grade five are asked to purchase the recommended laptop
model (specified below).
- Students entering grade nine who bought their laptops as fifth graders
should seriously consider upgrading to the recommended model. The warranty
on their four year old machine will soon expire and the Trevor technology
staff may have difficulty resolving hardware problems if replacement parts
are needed.
- Students entering grade nine whose laptops are still under warranty have the
option of purchasing a new machine or waiting until the warranty expires.
- All new Trevor students entering grades five through twelve in
September should purchase the recommended model, unless they already own an
equivalent machine that is under warranty.
- Any student who plans to replace his/her current laptop with a new model
should purchase the recommended model. (Replacement is optional and is
not recommended for students who have a functional laptop that is under
warranty.)
Trevor is
pleased to recommend the specially priced Dell Latitude D630 for
students who need a new laptop for the 2007-2008 school year.
The D630 laptop is fully equipped to support Vista Business edition and Dell is providing Trevor
families with a free upgrade from a 1.80GHz processor to 2.0GHz. The total cost
of the machine, including tax, shipping and handling is about $1,472. Included
in the price is a comprehensive four year warranty that incorporates Dell’s Next
Business Day on-site service plan with their Complete Care accidental damage
program.
We strongly
recommend that you purchase the recommended model. If, however, you decide to
comparison shop, please consider all of the available features and components of
the D630, especially Dell’s broad warranty. Also keep in mind that our
technology staff will generally be unable to support other laptop brands, and
there is a $200 academic software installation fee for any model purchased
outside the school program. It will be the responsibility of families choosing
to purchase other laptop models to keep those machines in good working order at
all times. Trevor discourages families from purchasing laptops outside of the
school program and I ask any family considering such a purchase to please
contact me prior to making a final decision.
You may order the D630 online
via Dell's web page for Trevor at
http://www.dell.com/atg/trevordayschool.
Alternatively, orders may be placed by telephone at 866-257-4711. If you order by phone, be sure to tell the sales representative
you are a Trevor parent so you receive the correct configuration and price.
The Dell Web page will allow you to customize the
D630 to suit your personal needs. None of the available upgrade options are
necessary for students to have successful educational technology experiences at
Trevor Day School. Some students and families have expressed interest in
selecting component upgrades for their personal use and for this reason Trevor
and Dell offer as many options as practical within our laptop program. We do
recommend that you purchase a padded backpack designed specifically to
accommodate and protect your laptop. The D630 dimensions are
13.3" x 9.37" x 1.27". You will find two rolling backpacks listed on the
Dell web page and several other options on the eBags web site at -
www.ebags.com/backpacks/laptop_backpacks/category_search/index.cfm?N=2003825
After you receive the new D630 we
will need to load Trevor's academic software image. If your child is in
grade 5 please have him/her bring the laptop to Mr. Reyes. In the Upper
School, Mr. Golanka or Mr. Sanchez will install the image.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any
questions.
