T revor’s
one-to-one computing program begins in the fifth grade and all students in
grades five through twelve are expected to have their own laptop. Please note
the following guidelines and recommendation for laptop purchases.
- Students
entering grade five are asked to purchase the laptop model recommended
model.
- Students
entering grade nine who bought their laptops as fifth graders should
seriously consider purchasing the recommended model, as their current
machine is no longer under warranty and the Trevor technology staff will not
be able to repair it.
- Students
entering grade nine whose laptops are still under warranty have the option
of purchasing a new machine or waiting until the warranty expires.
- All new
Trevor students entering grades five through twelve in the fall should
purchase the recommended model, unless they already own an equivalent
machine that is under warranty.
- Any student
who plans to replace his/her current laptop with a new model should purchase
the recommended model.
As indicated in our prior communications regarding Trevor Day School’s
recommendation for students to purchase the Latitude D410 laptop for the
2006-2007 school year, computer manufacturers periodically upgrade their product
lines. As you may be aware, many new laptops are now available with dual
processors, which significantly enhance computing power. Dell has recently
released several laptops with dual processors (Core Duo), including the Latitude
D620, which is superior to the D410. We are very pleased to announce that Dell
will offer the D620 to Trevor students for $1,550, a cost that is comparable to
that of the D410 and substantially less than the regular retail price for this
model. Therefore, Trevor Day School is recommending the Latitude D620 for
all students needing to purchase a new machine.
In addition to the D620’s stepped up processing power, it’s LCD (display) is 2”
wider than the D410’s, it has a faster hard drive, a removable internal CDRW/DVD
drive and is lighter in weight than almost all of Dell’s other laptop models. It
is slightly heavier than the D410, but its weight is well within our acceptable
range for Trevor students. The D620 will be shipped to you loaded with Windows
XP Professional, Office Professional 2003 and Trevor Day School's customized
software image. The quoted price also includes a four year warranty
that incorporates Dell’s Next Business Day on-site service plan with their
Complete Care accidental damage program.
Perhaps the most essential reason for us to switch to the D620 is Microsoft’s
expected 2007 release of a new and highly resource intensive operating system
(Windows Vista), which will require a dual processor machine to function at top
efficiency. Dell indicates the Latitude D620 is Windows VISTA capable, so if
your child elects to switch to Vista, you will not need to purchase a new
laptop.
The specially priced D620 is available on a
Web site Dell created specifically for Trevor Day School families and we
strongly recommend that you purchase this particular model. If however, you
decide to comparison shop, please consider all of
the available features and components of the D620, especially Dell’s
comprehensive warranty. Also keep in mind that the Trevor Day School technology
staff will generally be unable to support other laptop models and there is a
software installation fee for any model purchased outside the school program. It
will be the responsibility of families choosing to purchase other laptop models
to keep those machines in good working order at all times. Trevor discourages
families from purchasing laptops outside of the school program and I ask any
family considering such a purchase to please contact me prior to making a final
decision.
The Dell Web page will allow you to customize the D620 to suit your
personal needs. Please note that none of the available upgrade options are
necessary for students to have successful educational technology experiences at
Trevor Day School. Many students and families have shown interest in
selecting component upgrades for their own personal use and for this reason
Trevor and Dell provide as many options as possible within our laptop program.
It could take up to three weeks for Dell to ship your D620 laptop, so it should
be ordered no later than Friday, August 4th to guaranty
delivery before the beginning of the new school year.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions.
