Accessing a Wireless Network at Home

Trevor Day Technology: Accessing a Wireless Network at Home

*** PLEASE NOTE: These instructions only apply to those users who currently have WIRELESS networks available at home or in a place outside the Trevor Network ***

Make Sure Your Wireless Device is working properly*:

  1. Check the bar indicator (small, progressively increasing 4-bar icon) in your system tray (small icons in the bottom right of your screen, be sure it is expanded) by placing your mouse over the icon. You can also tell if the signal is good simply by checking if the 4 bars are green in color. If green, move on to the next section.

  2. If the bars are yellow, it means the signal is weak. Try to get a better signal (move closer to your wireless access point) before continuing.

  3. If it is grey, it means there is no signal available. In this case, double click on the bars to launch the Wireless Network Connection Properties, then do the following:
    1. Check the list of Available Networks. You should see your home network in this list. Common names for home networks include "default" or "linksys".
    2. You may also see other people’s networks listed (neighbors, nearby businesses). Be sure to choose your own.
    3. Click on your network, then click Configure.
    4. Simply click OK.
    5. Click OK again to exit the Wireless Network Connection Properties.

  4. Make sure to disable your Firewall Client:
    1. Mouse over the various icons in your system tray until you locate your ISA Client. This is the icon that will read "Connected to ISA Server FWEC1" (or similar) if it is enabled.
    2. Right click this icon, and select Disable.
    3. If you cannot find the icon, it may already be disabled, in which case it will read "Firewall Client disabled" when you mouse over it. Leave it disabled.
    4. IMPORTANT: Remember to re-enable the ISA Client when you come to class (same procedure).

  5. Make sure to disable your Proxy settings in your Internet Properties:
    1. Launch your Internet Explorer browser. If you still receive a message that the "Page cannot be displayed", you should disable your proxy server settings as follows:
    2. Go to the Tools menu, and select Internet Options
    3. Click the Connections tab along the top
    4. Click the LAN Settings button
    5. UNCHECK the checkbox for your Proxy server. This will grey out the address box below it.
    6. Click OK until you get back to your browser screen.
    7. Click the Refresh button or type in a new address to check your connection. It should now work.
