A two-part Tri-Chapter Workshop:
I. Song and Games from Europe
II. Choral Reading of new works from Hal Leonard
Over the Garden Wall (Hal Leonard Publications) is a new collection of thirty-eight children’s songs, rhymes and games from England, selected, transcribed and annotated by Dr. Susan Brumfield. Hot Peas and Barley-O is a similar collection of material from Scotland. Illustrated with rare archival photos from the past, along with the fresh faces of children of today, both books are filled with traditional children’s music. Hot Peas and Barley-O and Over the Garden Wall include CDs with field recordings collected in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. New recordings feature children from schools throughout the UK.
The first two in a series of volumes designed to bring scholarly research and practical application together in one anthology, these books were written for use in both home and school. Parents and children will enjoy exploring past, present and future through a rich heritage of musical play, while teachers will find activities for the classroom. We will look at historical references for each song, pedagogical indices and suggestions for developing a literacy-based music curriculum. We will also have a “sneak peek” at materials from Dr. Brumfield’s newest book in progress, Giro Giro Tondo: Children’s Songs and Games from Italy.
Finally, we will end with a reading session of new choral music, courtesy of Hal Leonard Publications.

Tip of the Day…..

| Create snowman patterns (an Elison die works well) and label some with quarter notes, pairs of eighth notes, and quarter rests. For half notes, use two snowmen which are connected. | |
| Use these to create 4 beat rhythm patterns. A piece of paper divided into 4 sections to designate 4 beats is a helpful frame. | |
| Take turns clapping the patterns they have created. | |
| Use these patterns to create a B section for “Snowflakes Are Falling,” either 4 different patterns or two of the patterns repeated. The rhythm may also be played on small percussion or glockenspiels set up in C pentatonic, like the song. |
PROCESS:
| Teach song through echo. | |
| Encourage students to notice if any of the parts of the song are the same | |
| Students sing that part, teacher sings the other parts. | |
| Switch; then sing the whole thing in unison. | |
| When students know the song well, try it as a two-part canon, starting the imitation after 4 beats. | |
| Try the round starting the imitation after 2 beats. | |
|
Later this can be performed as a 3- or 4-part round, entering every 2 beats. |
EXTENSION:
· Add an improvised introduction on glockenspiels imitative of snowflakes falling down. Each player (in free time) plays from high to low, two or three times. The last time when they get to the C at the bottom, they stop.
· Metallophones and Bass Xylophone can play a beat bordun on CG or octave C’s, alternating.
