Art Class: Puppets, Paper Making, Photography: Monday's: 3:30-4:30

Grades:   2nd - 5th
     
Description:    Puppets: (1st trimester)
Students will explore how to we can tell stories by writing, collaging, drawing, and making

Collage and Paper Making: (2nd trimester)
Students will explore the properties of paper, making 2 and 3 dimensional collages, constructions and recycle paper to make our own.

Photography (3rd trimester)
What makes a photograph art? We will address this question by exploring digital photography. Students will learn about some factors that effect photography including point of view, lighting, and subject. Students will use digital cameras, do various activities using collage and drawing, and look at the work of photographers.

The Actor's Garage: Thursday's 3:30-4:30

Grades:   2nd - 5th
     
Description:    Making Commercials: (1st trimester), Stand-Up Comedy: (2nd trimester) Creating TV Shows/Movies: (3rd trimester) Student's explore acting exercises and learn to create their TV commercials, as well as learning to write and perform their own stand-up comedy, and creating plays based on TV show and Movie Scripts. Each week the teacher will film the student's work and then the student's will have an opportunity to watch and critique their acting.

Broadway Bound Dance Mix: Thursday's: 4:30-5:30

Grades:   2nd - 5th
     
Description:   Hip Hop/Jazz: (1st trimester) If you want a class where the first rule is to have fun, come dance with Erin Glass and Broadway Bound. You will learn moves from popular Broadway shows and cool hip-hop pieces. You’ll make up dances to your favorite songs and learn how to put steps together. Special celebrity guests from Broadway shows will also stop by to teach some new steps. At the end of the semester, there will be a showcase to show off all you’ve learned. This is for boys and girls at all levels.

Stomp/Tap: (2nd trimester) Stomp your feet, clap your hands and jump up and down with Broadway Bound! In this exciting new class we will learn all about rythm and rhyming while creating music with our bodies, voices and everyday objects. Have you ever tapped your pencil on your desk in class or tapped your toes while waiting in line? Then you are ready for our class. We will combine super cool dance moves with stepping and stomping to create our own dances. Some of our routines will be set to music and others will be combined with rhymes we make up ourselves. We will also make some of our own musical instruments to use in our show on the last day of class! So step on up for a stompin' good time!!


Musical Theatre: (3rd trimester) Student's will learn different dances and learn songs to popular broadways shows. At the end of the trimester we will put on a performance for families and friends.

Chess Club I-II: Monday's and Tuesday's: 3:30-4:30

Grades:   Kindergarten and 1st Grade
     
Description:   Beginners learn elementary rules: how each piece moves and beginner chess strategies in openings and simple checkmate pictures.

Chess Club III-IV: Monday's and Tuesday's: 4:30-5:30

Grades:   2nd - 5th
     
Description:   Students will learn to solve checkmate pictures in one or two moves and begin to learn elementary checkmate principles and simple game plans.

Cooking: Tuesday's: 3:30-5

Grades:   2nd - 5th
     
Description:   Calling all crazy cooks- Are you tired of the regular AfterSchool snacks, graham crackers, saltines and raisin? Well, here's your chance to whip up your favorite dish or a fun appetizing snack. Students will also have the opportunity to focus on the nutrition portion of all the delicious meals they are cooking. (1st trimester: Healthy Desserts, 2nd trimester: Fun Appetizers, 3rd trimester: Animal Designs.)

Encore Sports: Thursday's: 3:30-5

Grades:   2nd - 5th
     
Description:   Using the expanded space of Darlington Hall, Larry Aberback, longtime TDS Encore Sports teacher, will provide space for learning and practicing many different sports that are appropriate for our indoor space. The students usually meet in the school gym. When available and depending on the weather, in the Fall and Spring Semester, Larry will take the students outdoors to Central Park. Students will also have the opportunity to play games.

Homework Room: Monday's-Thursday's.

Grades:   3rd – 5th
     
Description:   A quiet time to independently do homework will be supervised by one or two of the After School teachers. This is not a time to get extra help with homework; the teachers will help create an atmosphere conducive to doing homework and will hold students accountable for going to the Homework Room. Students and parents need to discuss family expectations about how to use this time.

K1: Beginning to Explore Drama: Monday's: 3:30-4:30

Grades:   Kindergarten and 1st
     
Description:   As part of core, students will dive into the world of drama and begin to learn how to use their imagination by exploring and performing story drama's, role-play, group drama's, fairy tales and nursery rhymes. If your child loves to perform for you in your living room and is always in the spot light, then this is the class for them.

Grades:   Kindergarten and 1st
     
Description:   If you want a class where the first rule is to have fun, come dance with Erin Glass from Broadway Bound. Students will begin learning the basics of creative movement and then proceed to learn moves from Broadway to ballet, and from hip-hop to stomp. You’ll make up dances to your favorite songs. At the end of the semester, there will be a showcase to show off all you’ve learned. This is for boys and girls and it is part of Core.

Mad Science: Wednesday's: 3:30-4:30

Description:   In this "edutaining" class, students will have the opportunity to work in a hands-on, interactive, and environment learning fun and wacky science experiments. The Mad Scientists spark the imagination and curiosity of children everywhere. Some examples of the experiments/activities the students will participate in are: Dry Ice, Laser Light, Rocket Building, Space Mud, Mad Science Silly Putty, Space, Acids & Bases, Marshmallow molecules, Hair-raising and making their own Cotton Candy.

Martial Arts for 2nd - 5th: Wednesday's: 4:30-5:30, Friday's: 3:30-4:30

Grades:   2nd – 5th
     
Description:   This class is designed for students in second grade and above or first grade students with a yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do. Taught by teachers trained at the World Martial Arts Association, this is a fast-paced class where students are taught at their individualized skills level.

Description:   Participants will be introduced to Tae Kwon Do through physical training and storytelling. Students will develop basic martial arts skills, better concentration and an increased awareness of safety issues related to self-defense.

Robotics: Monday's: 3:30-5

Grades:   4th - 5th
     
Description:   Robotics offers 4th and 5th grade students the opportunity to build a team to participate in the F.I.R.S.T LEGO League tournaments. Students work hands-on in designing, building, and programming LEGO Mindstorms robots. Rollerblading: Tuesday's: 3-5

Description:   Rollerblading taught by the staff of RollAmerica is a popular course in a number of independent schools in our area. We will use the courts behind the Metropolitan Museum in Central Park , and the students will work on skills and play games at their level.

Description:   This program introduces soccer to boys and girls in an atmosphere where participation, skills development, and decision-making are the focal points. All students should have shin guards and sneakers.
